Star Trek Cake

There were a few big cake orders on my plate this past week. One of the  orders was for this Starship Enterprise cake for a lucky trekkie’s birthday celebration.  The U.S.S. Enterprise was certainly not an easy cake job – it took a lot of time with all the details.  But, as I mentioned to the client, it was so refreshing getting to make this cake – a nice break from my typical feminine cake orders. As I was making it, I was reminded of a special childhood memory involving Leonard Nimoy. Follow along below to hear that story and see a couple more cake photos.

I’ll never forget my Dad teaching my brother and I how to do the vulcan salute on a New Years Eve way back when. He was teaching it to us so we could salute Leonard Nimoy in person at The Rose Parade that next morning (Nimoy was an honorary parade guest that year). My brother and I practiced all night and the next day we stood proudly on the sidewalk saluting Nimoy. He smiled and then saluted us in return – a memory that is still so clear in my mind. The request for this cake came in 1 week before Leonard Nimoy’s passing. As I was working on the cake I became nostalgic of childhood and the simple memories that for some reason we choose to remember so vividly. Live long and prosper, all.

Great cake!! I am curious how you made the nice silver color of the icing … Is there a silver food coloring that I can buy, or do you have to mix different colors (red, blue, yellow, green) to achieve the silver or gray color? I am trying to make a similar birthday cake for my son. Thanks!

I use a silver airbrush color from AmeriColor and add it on with a cosmetic sponge. Hope that helps!
