DIY: Heart Krispie Valentines

heart krispie valentines
Happy Wednesday, everyone!  Here’s another DIY Valentine idea from yours truly – Heart Krispie Valentines! And like the previous Valentine DIYs, this idea is not solely suited for the greeting card holiday, these tasty treats could serve as adorable DIY wedding favors, birthday party goodies, just-because presents, gifts for friends and neighbors, etc…endless possibilities!

For this tutorial I passed on taking photos of the  how-to part with the rice krispies because I’m pretty certain almost everyone knows how to make those. The ingredients and directions are still included below, just in case you need them.

Part 1 – Chocolate Covered Rice Krispie Hearts:

Ingredients:

  • 3 Tb Butter
  • 5 cups marshmallows
  • 6 cups Rice Krispies® cereal
  • 1 bag mini white chocolate chips + food color (for the top)

Materials:

  • Baking Pan
  • Heart cookie cutter

Directions: Melt butter in a large microwave-safe bowl in microwave for 45 seconds. Once melted, add marshmallows to the melted butter and toss to coat. Place bowl back in microwave for 2 minutes. Remove, add cereal, stir to smooth. Place mixture into a greased pan, pressing onto mixture to form into pan. Let sit for an hour before cutting out your hearts with the cookie cutter. For the chocolate, I find it easiest to melt small batches in the microwave. Pour about 1/2 cup of white chocolate chips in the microwave and heat on medium-power for about 2 minutes, stopping to stir every 30 seconds.  Once your chips are melted, remove and add food coloring (quickly). Then stir to mix the color and apply to your heart krispies.  As you can see, I worked in a gradient of pink tones and even added polka dots with royal icing to one lucky little heart.

Once you have your chocolate-covered rice krispie hearts, you’re ready for part 2!

Part 2: Krispie Heart Treat Bags

Materials Needed:

  • Clear plastic “party” bags
  • Tape (TheWashiShop on Etsy has lots of cute Washi tape options)
  • Colorful paper
  • Glue Stick

Step 1: Cut your paper to the width of your plastic bag and the height of your heart krispie + 2″.  Add on a personalized to/from, as I did with a little heart I glued to the top corner of each paper.

Step 2: Place your paper inside the bag.

Step 3: Drop in your little heart krispie treat.

Step 4: Center your heart in the middle of your bag and close the bag by folding and taping to the back side of the bag – folding tightly to ensure your heart doesn’t move around too much.  Using double-sided paper and washi tape makes both sides of your package look pretty adorable.

I remember being a kid and having the hardest time picking out which Valentines I wanted to give to my classmates. If only I would have had these as an option…it would have been such an easy decision!  It’s impossible for 2 kids to have the same Valentines when they’re handmade…and how great to let your kids personalize their own. I will be giving these away to my friends because they’re so darn cute and I’m sure my friends will be very excited to receive them, because who doesn’t like a cute little chocolate-covered rice krispie treat?!  Have fun!
